What a QR code actually is
QR stands for “Quick Response.” At heart, a QR code is just a way of writing text in a shape a camera can read instead of a shape a human can read. The most common thing stored inside is a web address, but it can also hold plain text, contact details, Wi-Fi login info, or a payment link.
Think of it like a barcode that grew up. The striped barcodes on grocery items only store data in one direction, left to right, so they can hold a small number. A QR code stores data both across and down, which is why it can pack in hundreds of characters into a small square. That two-dimensional layout is the whole trick.
How your phone reads one
When you aim your camera at a QR code, your phone is not “seeing” a picture the way you do. It is hunting for landmarks. Look closely at any QR code and you will spot three larger squares in three of the corners. These are called finder patterns, and they tell the phone, “this is a QR code, and here is how it is rotated.” That is why you can scan a code upside down or at an angle and it still works.
Once the phone locks onto those corners, it maps the grid of small squares (each one is called a module) into a pattern of light and dark. Dark means one, light means zero. The phone reads that stream of ones and zeros, reassembles it into text, and hands the result to you, usually as a tappable link.
Why a torn or dirty code still works
Here is the genuinely clever part. QR codes carry built-in error correction. When the code is created, extra backup data is woven in alongside the real data using a math technique called Reed-Solomon coding. Depending on the setting chosen, a code can lose up to roughly 30 percent of its area and still scan perfectly.
This is why a coffee stain, a small tear, or even a company logo placed in the middle of a code does not break it. The phone uses the backup data to fill in the gaps. It is also why those decorative QR codes with rounded dots and brand colors still function, as long as there is enough contrast between the light and dark parts.
Using QR codes without getting burned
For everyday use, the camera app on most modern phones reads QR codes automatically. Open the camera, point it at the code, and wait for the link to pop up. You usually do not need a separate app.
A few habits keep you safe. Before tapping, glance at the web address your phone previews. A QR code cannot show you where it leads until you read that preview, and scammers sometimes paste fake codes over real ones in public places. If a link looks nothing like the business you expected, do not open it. Treat a scanned link with the same caution you would give a link in an email from a stranger.
